Are Coupon Websites Big Money?
Coupons websites are EVERYWHERE, just type your favorite store followed by the word “coupon” and you’ll see pages and pages of results. The question we ask is WHY are coupon websites so popular with Entrepreneurs? Turns out that coupons are an easy money maker because everyone loves to buy, but no one likes to be sold to. Coupons (while actually a method of affiliate marketing and DEFINITELY selling something) aren’t seen as sales copy but as a gift or incentive.
Wenda O’Neill, author of Coupon Money Mastery 2.0 explains it like this, “Every week, sometimes every day people are shopping. They shop for food, for lawn products, for Pet care, and this time of year, semi formal dresses and suits. My coupon websites help them find those things by encouraging them to step into the vendor website with a coupon. Coupon Marketers generally get paid for “click-through” and that’s a numbers game, however good content, coupons and google adsense are the winning combination”
Getting Started With Coupons
At their heart, coupons are a type of affiliate marketing. The most popular (and the type of coupon most people think about when they think about coupons) are the Grocery Coupons. These coupons are updated frequently and there are only a few heavy players in this industry. Fortunately, they have great programs for individuals to tap into their database of coupons. Coupons.com and Savings.com. Redplum used to offer great access to their coupons, but now it’s a convoluted combination of Commission Junction and their own site.
Getting paid with coupons
Like any other website designed to make the owner money through clicks… the key is traffic. The nice thing about coupons is that posting the content form the various coupon providers inherently provides a type of content, and positive organic search results are more likely. In my experience with coupon websites, the more closely you can book a domain name to the actual keyword types into the search engine, the more likely your site will popular on the first page of results. Having said that, you don’t want your domain or site to represent something other than … that which it really is, because in the end the idea is to get people to click on the ads. Not just visit your site.
If you’re interested in starting a coupon website, you also need to know you can start one free… sort of. It never costs anything to sign up as an affiliate to gain access to the coupons… but not all “free” hosting options will allow the coupon “coding” that is required for you to display and get credit for the clicks. Stay away from the free WordPress.com they are NOT coupon website friendly. In fact, they took down several of my sites when they changed this policy. However, as of this writing, Google Blogger is VERY coupon friendly, and while not as easy or intuitive to use as WordPress it works. It will allow you to step into the coupon website business without having to spend any money.
